Academic Intervention
In the background of the Dublin Conference and the importance assigned to sustainability, WI introduced a M. Tech. program in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in 2009; this programme was revamped in 2017 by including the overall environmental perspective, as M.Tech in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. Around 60 students passed out of the portals of Karunya to practise IWRM in different parts of India and abroad.
In framing the curriculum and syllabi for M.Tch in IWRM, the guidelines of UNESCO-IHE and SaciWATERs were extensively made use of.
WI also offers a Ph.D. Programme, and more than 20 doctoral theses related to water are either completed or in the process of completion. These works cover a large spectrum of topics in hydrology and water management: impact of LCLUC on hydrology, isotope application for groundwater recharge studies, evolving reservoir operation policy, contribution of hydroelectric projects to environmental flows, application of nano-membranes, electrocoagulation, electro-dialysis, CDI and bioremediation for water treatment.
International Association for Exchange of Students in Technical Experience (IAESTE)
Forty five students from different countries like US, Germany, Spain, Austria, Poland, Japan, Gana, Brazil, Tunsia, Kazakhstan, Scotland, Switzerland, Nigeria and Austria have taken up their internship in KITS under the IAESTE scheme in the areas of watershed management, water audit, groundwater flow and contaminant transport, hydrological modeling, electrochemical techniques in water and wastewater treatment, water conservation, application of GIS and remote sensing in water resources management, groundwater recharge studies, nanoparticle transport studies in porous media and wetland management. The interns were also involved in water related projects in the campus, like water auditing, performance evaluation of different unit operations in sewage treatment plants in the campus, modeling and simulation of Activated Sludge Process using MATLAB, identifying the site location for artificial recharge structures using rainfall- runoff models including SWAT for stormwater management and cost-effective grey water treatment.
